I was deeply fascinated last week with the Frozen post we saw and decided to find a Disney related theme. This article has to do with a controversial issue with Disney producing a repetitive theme that the "good" characters in these films no matter what speak American English, even if they happen to be in a foreign setting. As for the "bad" characters, it has been noted that they usually have a British English accent, making the appearance that people from Britain are not the nicest. I thought this was so interesting, I have grown up watching these movies and still do but, thankfully, don't have bad stereotypes about British people. With that being said I'm not sur wifi agree with this article because it didn't affect me much but I do notice how the main characters of each Disney video speak American English and the villain will most likely have some other accent. One of my favorite parts in this article was in the clip of Mufasa and Scar. It's obvious they're brothers, but also obvious Scar has a complete different accent. Now i wonder what Disney's film makers actually are thinking when they make these movies.

I too have seen things about how Disney portrays their characters and how it affects kids views of the outside world. I never thought that being British was a bad thing but why is that a bad guy can't be from the same place as the protagonist or at least portrayed that way. This is super interesting and I'm glad i got to read about it.
ReplyDeleteI actually realized this a while back. I can understand why American English is used for the "good" character because we like to think we are always the good people. As for the British Accent, I think it is so that we do not get confused, as a child, with who is who. In the article it said that when the movies are translated, other countries also use different accents to set the good and bad characters apart. this was a good reading.
ReplyDeleteI love this article!! I noticed this difference a little while ago when I was watching some Disney classics with my daughter. She knew right away who the villain was and who was the good guys. There are some good guys with accents like Zazu from The Lion King, but mostly they have an accent different from American. My daughter didn't pick up on the difference of accents, but then again she doesn't really no any accents other than Bruce from Finding Nemo's Austrailian accent!! Luckily her mind isn't as narrow as ours as adults to see the discrimination.
